Maths feast on Pi Day for WHSB Students

Pi Day is the annual celebration of the mathematical constant π, approximately equal to 3.14159 (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter). First celebrated in the United States, it is observed on 14 March, with 3, 1, and 4 being the first three significant figures of Pi.
Pi Day 2025 saw two teams from WHSB compete in the annual "Maths Feast" Competition, a fun educational challenge for Year 10 pupils, which tests problem-solving and teamwork skills, hosted this year by the James Hornsby School. Both teams were a credit to the School, demonstrating their ability to collaborate seamlessly and approach problems with precision and creativity.
Their focus and determination were evident as they tackled even the toughest questions with a mix of analytical thinking and group coordination, resulting in them finishing in a close first and second place out of 15 teams. We are proud of and congratulate Reuben, Ben, James, Arun, Timothy, Hobert, Max and Toby on their outstanding achievement.
WHSB Pi Day celebrations back in School included special themed sessions and related fun mathematical activities arranged by our Mathematics Department. Students also participated in lunchtime Pi themed biscuit decorating and competed in the annual Pi Recitation Competition. This year's winners saw third placed Joe (Year 12) recite 286 digits of Pi, second placed Ronnie (Year 13) 328, and in first place was Kevin (Year 8 ) with an incredible 347 digits, with all three beating the previous School record of 207!
With thanks to Mrs Hammond for preparing the "Maths Feast" teams, and to Miss James and colleagues within the Mathematics Department for facilitating the Pi Day activities.
